egeniouss Experts in Interviews: Partner Ismael Colomina Leading the Way in Smartphone Sensor-Powered Precision Navigation

Nuria Martínez (DEC Manager at CEL) asks: Can you explain in your own words, what the egeniouss base technology is (and how you use it in your app)?

Ismael Colomina (egeniouss partner at GeoNumerics) answers: egeniouss integrates the imaging and motion sensors of a smartphone with available geographical information to provide enhanced positioning and navigation capabilities.

Nuria Martínez (DEC Manager at CEL) asks: Where do you see the biggest impact for the citizens?

Ismael Colomina (egeniouss partner at GeoNumerics) answers: egeniouss will showcase its benefits for three applications: surveying, bike, and drone navigation. However, it is clear that many other professional, academic or leisure activities can benefit thereof. In the end, is all about taking a further step towards putting more precision and accuracy at rather moderate costs in the hands of the citizens.

Nuria Martínez (DEC Manager at CEL) asks: What are the benefits for your company?

Ismael Colomina (egeniouss partner at GeoNumerics) answers: GeoNumerics has extensive experience in the fusion of motion and imaging sensors for positioning and navigation applications. However, we never did it for sensors embedded in a smartphone and we never had our integration software running on an Android platform. Scientifically and technically, this is a “constructive challenge.” Commercially, egeniouss will open new market avenues for the company.

Nuria Martínez (DEC Manager at CEL) asks: What do you like most in the egeniouss approach?

Ismael Colomina (egeniouss partner at GeoNumerics) answers: As I already highlighted in its beginning, the egeniouss project brings together European top experts in various domains, namely, experts in geodesy, photogrammetry, computer vision, robotics, drones, inertial and satellite navigation. While the used sensors naturally call for such a multidisciplinary approach, it is seldom the case that such a comprehensive set of experts cooperate that closely in the attendant research and development activities. The more the project progresses, the more I am convinced of the advantages of such cooperation.
